Michigan CPL Cost and Renewal.

There are two parts to the cost of a Michigan CPL: the government fees you pay your county clerk and the State Police, and the separate tuition you pay your instructor for the class. Here is how both break down, plus how renewal works.

Government fees

FeeAmountPaid to
New application and licensing fee$100Paid to your county clerk
Fingerprinting$15Paid to the fingerprinting provider
Renewal fee$115Paid to the county clerk or the State Police
Replacement license$10Paid to your county clerk

Instructor tuition

Class tuition is set by each instructor and is not capped by the state, so prices vary. You will see the exact price on each listing when you search for a class. Booking through the platform shows one all-in price with no surprise fees at checkout.

How renewal works

  • Renewal training is lighter than the first class. You certify that you completed at least 3 hours reviewing the required topics and at least 1 hour of range time, with the range time done in the 6 months before you renew. You do not need a separate certificate for renewal.
  • The renewal fee is $115. You can renew online with a PIN mailed in your renewal notice, by mail to the State Police, or in person at your county clerk.
  • You can apply up to 6 months before your license expires, and you remain eligible to renew if it has been expired for less than 1 year.
  • If your license has been expired for more than 1 year, you cannot renew it. You start over as a new applicant, which means the full 8-hour class again.
