Michigan CPL Cost. What You Pay for Your Concealed Pistol License.
There are two parts to the cost of a Michigan CPL: the government fees you pay your county clerk and the State Police, and the separate tuition you pay your instructor for the class. Here is how much a CPL costs in Michigan, broken down.
How much is a CPL in Michigan? Government fees first

Instructor tuition

A realistic all-in figure
For a first-time CPL, plan on the $100 application fee plus $15 fingerprinting paid to the county, and separate class tuition that most often lands in the rough range of $70 to $200. Renewal is different: the state fee is $115 and the training is lighter. See the renewal page for those details.
Michigan CPL renewal cost in 2026
Renewal is cheaper than a first application because the training is lighter and you almost never pay for fingerprints again. Here is what a Michigan CPL renewal actually costs right now.

The $115 renewal fee is the same whether you file at the county clerk or online with the State Police. Michigan law sends $36 of it to your county and the rest to the State Police. Fingerprints have been kept on file since January 1, 2006, so anyone licensed since then normally skips that cost on a renewal.
What the training costs, and why it is so much less
A first-time CPL means the full 8-hour certified course. Renewal does not. Under MCL 28.425l(9) the education requirement is waived for renewals, and you instead certify on the application that you completed at least 3 hours reviewing the CPL topics and had at least 1 hour of range time in the 6 months before you file. That subsection also says an applicant "is not required to verify the statements made under this subsection and is not required to obtain a certificate or undergo training other than as required by this subsection." In plain terms: the 3-hour review is self-certified, and no certificate of completion is issued or required for a renewal.
So why book a renewal class at all? Because the statute still asks you to sign that you did the review and the range hour. A structured class is the easiest way to make that signature true, get the range hour done under supervision, and hear what changed in Michigan gun law since your last license. Renewal classes listed here typically run around $50.
Will the renewal fee drop to $30? House Bill 4284
There is a live bill that would cut the CPL renewal fee from $115 to $30. House Bill 4284 of 2025 passed the Michigan House on January 14, 2026 by a vote of 63 to 46 and was referred to the Senate Committee on Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety on January 21, 2026.
It is not law. As of August 2026 the bill is still sitting in that Senate committee, and the fee you pay today is $115. The House Fiscal Agency flagged that the cut would remove roughly $8 million a year that currently funds the State Police CPL system, which is a large part of why it has not moved faster. If you are due to renew now, budget $115 and do not wait on the bill.
