Michigan CPL Renewal Class. Renew Your Concealed Pistol License.

Renewing a Michigan CPL is lighter than the first time around. You do not retake the full 8-hour class. You complete a short review and a range hour, then file your renewal. Here is how to renew your CPL in Michigan, what it costs, and where to book the renewal training.

Renewal is shorter than your first class

A Michigan CPL is valid until your birthday that falls 4 to 5 years after it was issued. When that date gets close, you renew rather than start over. The renewal training is a fraction of the original 8 hours, and you do not file a new fingerprint or sit a full new-applicant class as long as you renew on time.

What Michigan requires to renew

  • You certify that you completed at least 3 hours reviewing the required CPL topics. This is a review of the same subjects from your first class, not a full re-teach.
  • You certify at least 1 hour of range time, and that range hour has to be done within the 6 months before you renew.
  • You do not need a separate certificate of completion for renewal. You attest to the review and range hour on the renewal application.
  • The renewal fee is $115, paid to your county clerk or the Michigan State Police.

The renewal window. Do not let it lapse

  • You can renew up to 6 months before your license expires, so there is no reason to wait until the last week.
  • If your CPL has already expired, you can still renew it as long as it has been expired for less than 1 year.
  • If your license has been expired for more than 1 year, you cannot renew. You start over as a new applicant, which means the full 8-hour class, fingerprints, and the $100 application fee again. Renewing on time is much cheaper.

How to renew your CPL in Michigan

Online with a PIN

Your renewal notice from the State Police includes a PIN. Use it to renew online, the fastest option for most people.

By mail

Mail your completed renewal application and the $115 fee to the Michigan State Police as directed in your renewal notice.

In person

File your renewal in person at your county clerk if you prefer to hand it in and pay there.

Can I renew my CPL online in Michigan?

The renewal filing itself can be done online with the PIN from your renewal notice. The training is a separate step. The law sets the renewal training by hours and topics, so some instructors offer the review portion live over video while the 1-hour range qualification stays in person because you fire live rounds. Check each listing to confirm how a given renewal class is delivered.
